Brighton and Hove Children's Festival - White Rabbit

As part of the fantastic Brighton and Hove Children’s Festival 2012, White Rabbit performed a magical and fantastical selection of short stories for children, including some of their own work and some stories submitted by writers from Brighton, all based around the themes of courage and bravery.

The show took place in The Basement on Kensington Street, a venue I’d not been to before but it was absolutely perfect. On arrival we were led down some steps into a room which had been decorated and furnished in warm, bright colours with big soft floor cushions, cushioned ledges, tea sets, lamp shades and gorgeous soft blue and red lighting. We were greeted with big bowls of popcorn, and plates laden with cakes and biscuits which were handed out as we sat down to listen to the stories.

Are You Sitting Comfortably? Brighton and Hove Children's FestivalThe stories were funny, quirky and cute, although my 6 year old probably appreciated them more than my 3 year old. The story tellers were engaging and related so well to all the children, and to my relief didn’t seem to mind when my 3 year old decided he was going to take a wander round the room while the stories were still in full flow! There were some great twists to the event – after the story telling we played Pass the Parcel with a difference – between each layer of parcel the children had to answer a question based on all time favourite books such as Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Harry Potter. Fun prizes were handed out for answers. This lovely event ended with a light-hearted dancing competition, all great fun!

White Rabbit’s Are You Sitting Comfortably events have become a regular and popular fixture of The Basement’s programme and have been hugely successful in London. Pitched somewhere between, theatre, story-telling and themed installation White Rabbit presented a special version of the event for children.
